HSS Research

Researchers in the Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) examine the human experience in all of its richness and complexity. They conduct inquiries that advance knowledge in a wide range of subjects—from the evolution of society, culture, institutions, and ideas to works of the imagination. They bring new insights to the behaviors and decisions made by individuals, groups, and organizations.

Research in HSS is highly interdisciplinary, bringing together historians, literary critics, political scientists, philosophers, economists, neuroscientists, and other specialists who together explore innovative ideas in an atmosphere that rewards risk taking, unconventional and creative thinking. Their investigations in the humanities and social sciences have led to the establishment of new fields of research and modes of inquiry, and to discoveries that have changed the way we understand, interpret, and interact with our world.
